In Season 6, the birth of the Buchmans’ baby leads them to learn new truths about themselves. As Jamie (Helen Hunt) vacillates over returning to work and Paul’s (Paul Reiser) new film offers a glimpse into his work and family life, they discover that they’re lacking important parenting skills. After a painstaking search for a name for their daughter, they face a host of problems recognizable by modern parents everywhere – leaving Mabel with a sitter, anxiously having sex for the first time since the birth, and juggling day-care duties while trying to keep their jobs. After his attempt to produce a children’s video backfires, Paul offers to direct his parents in a community theatre production. And when Paul’s mother feels forgotten on Mother’s Day after everyone showers Jamie with gifts, a string of meddling relatives and friends continues to enliven and complicate the Buchmans’ lives.
