As they approach their second year as parents, Paul and Jamie try to focus on their relationship while getting some hands-on experience in how to raise their little girl.

Having settled into their roles as parents, the Buchmans face a host of challenges that make life more interesting than ever. With Mabel beginning to crawl, walk and talk, they are forced to reexamine their daughter’s influences after her first word turns out to be a profanity. As they turn their attention to their oft-neglected relationship, Jamie (Helen Hunt) becomes addicted to mid-day sex, while Paul (Paul Reiser) suggests using a business trip to Los Angeles as a romantic weekend getaway. After a serious flirtation with buying a new house in the suburbs falls through, and anxiety caused by the mistaken belief that they might actually be cousins blows over, the season and the series conclude with two episodes set in the year 2028 in which Mabel looks back at how she was affected by her parents’ discovery that they weren’t actually married.
